Owls look to start another run this week in Showcase vs Lakers and Lights
By Dave Druk
December 13th, 2011
The Minnesota Owls came into last weekend picking up 15 of a possible 16 points and were the hottest team in the Minnesota Junior Hockey League. The weekend started well and ended with a disappointing home loss to end the streak.
On Friday the Edina Lakers came to David C. Johnson Arena to take on the Owls. The first period saw both teams score a goal. Jerid Adamson scored on the PP for the Owls.
The second period had the Owls outscore the Lakers 2-1 to take a 3-2 lead. Jacob Melwitz on the PP and Nick Ernst put the biscuit in the basket for the home squad.
The Owls scored the next two goals in the third period as Robert Erickson scored and Kolton Kahoot blasted one home shorthanded style. Things were looking great for the team that the fans came to cheer for with only 8 and a half minutes left in the game and a 5-2 lead. However Edina never gave up scoring the next three goals with two of them on the power play and the game went to overtime.
Great players score big goals. Robert Erickson won the Blaine Jaycees Owls Star Award in 2011 and is the favorite in 2012. Especially after he scored the biggest goal of this game in Overtime to give the Owls a hard fought 6-5 win.
Brad Jerzewski stopped 28 shots to get the win for the Owls.
The Blaine Jaycees Three Stars of the game were (3) Nick Ernst, (2) Jacob Melwitz, and (1) Robert Erickson
On Saturday the Owls took on the team that is immediately behind them in the standings and played perhaps there most uninspired game of the year. They were outshot 18-3 and outscored 2-0 in the first period and fell 4-1.
The team played much better in the next two periods as Nick Ernst scored a nice goal in the second period but it just wasn’t enough. Jerzewski was in goal and played a great game stopping 33 shots in defeat.
The Blaine Jaycees Three Stars of the Game were (3) Jess Enquist, (2) Kyle Johnson, and (1) Jacob Melwitz

Since the 2003-2004 season the Minnesota Owls have announced the Owls three stars of the game after every home game. The announcer of the owls Dave Druk was sick of announcing other players for the three stars and figured that the home crowd would like to hear names of players from the home team after the game for the three stars. Since that first game of the 03-04 season the tradition of Owls Greatness started!!!
Each player receives one point for a third star, two points for a second star, and three points for being the number one star of the game. At the end of the season the Blaine Jaycees present the winner of the award a trophy and also put that players name on a plaque listing all of the all time winners.
The all time winners of the award are…
2004-Dominic Morris (D) 2005-Brandon Olivier (F) 2006-Jon Griefenhagen (F) 2007-Ronnie Druk (G) 2008-Phil Poeschl (G) 2009-Joscha Pettit (F) 2009-Jakub Simicek (F) 2010-Robert Erickson (F)

By Colin Dickey The Minnesota Owls would like to thank everyone who supported their Breast Cancer Awareness Night on Friday Oct. 21. It was a great night of both hockey and fundraising which culminated in raising $4000.00 for the Harbor Room Cancer Resource Center which is located at the Cambridge Medical Center. The Owls played in pink jerseys which were bid on during the game by their loyal fans in a silent auction. After some last minute, frenzied bidding, the lucky winners were awarded their jerseys at the end of the game by the players themselves. It was a great show of support by our Owls fans! The Blaine JayCees were also extremely generous, and donated $200.00 for every puck Owls Assistant Coachs Travis Kuznia and Dennis Johnson put in the net, in a contest during the first intermission. The coachs netted 9 out of 10 goals from the blue line, for a total of $1800.00! The Blaine JayCees then donated $200.00 more by bidding and winning Kyle Johnson’s pink jersey. We would like to thank the JayCees for their wonderful donation of $2000.00 total! The outcome on the ice was not what everyone hoped, with the Owls losing in a shootout 3-2, but in the end it was a fun night for all, with the most important part being, the money raised will help support local cancer patients and their families.
